Early Career:

In 2011, Srikanth Kidambi started playing at the international level. He got an opportunity to play in the Asian Junior Championships. There he won a bronze medal in a mixed team event. He then played in the Commonwealth Youth Games, where he won a silver medal in the mixed category and a bronze medal in the doubles.

Since then, he never looked back and won both singles and doubles titles at the All India Junior International Badminton Championship held in Pune, India. After one year, he emerged as the winner of the Maldives International Challenges. He defeated Zulfadli Zulkiffli in the men’s singles category.

In 2013, Srikanth came into the mainstream media when he claimed his first senior national title. He defeated reigning champion and Olympian Parupalli Kashyap at the All India Senior National Championships in Delhi.

Next year, he was part of the Indian badminton contingent at the Commonwealth Games. With them, Kidambi played in the mixed-team event and reached the semi-finals. In the same tournament, he also reached the quarter-finals in the singles category.

Srikanth shocked the whole world at the 2014 China Open Super Series Premier, where he emerged victorious against the 5-time World Champion, 2-time Olympic Champion, and 2-time World Cup Champion, Lin Dan. He beat him and became the first Indian to win a Super Series Premier men’s title.

The 2016 Rio Olympics was going well for Srikanth until he met Lin Dan. He was defeated by Lin by a score of 6-21, 21-11, and 18-21. Next year, in 2017, he successfully created history along with his partner, “Sai Praneeth” in the doubles category. They became the first-ever Indian pair to enter the finals of a ranking event in badminton.

After that, Srikanth Kidambi won several titles, including the Indonesia Super Series, the Australian Super Series, and the French Super Series. These victories helped him reach his career-best world rankings of 2 in 2018. In the same year, at the Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, he went on to win a gold in the mixed team event, and a silver in the singles event.

Later, Srikanth Kidambi became World number 1 badminton player in the men’s single category.
