Lakshya Sen took his first breath on August 16th, 2001, in the Almora district of Uttarakhand, India. He was born to his father, Dhirendra K Sen, and mother, Nirmala Dhirendra Sen. Sen grew up alongside his elder brother Chirag Sen, who’s also a professional badminton player.

Lakshya Sen Early Career:

In 2010, when he was 9, he convinced his father to let him come along when he was taking his elder son to play in the Union Bank All-India Junior Ranking Badminton Tournament.

There, Lakshya also showed a strong interest in the game. Noticing his potential, a coach suggested his name to Prakash Padukone, also known as the father of Indian badminton. Impressed by Lakshya’s ability, Padukone decided to mentor him.

At the Prakash Padukone Academy, Lakshya trained with great dedication. In 2014, he won the Swiss Junior International title and also had an impressive run in the junior circuit in 2016. When he was just 15 years old, Lakshya broke his mentor Prakash Padukone’s record by becoming the youngest Indian to reach the national men’s singles final.

In the same year, he secured a bronze medal at the Junior Asian Championship. He then stepped into senior-level tournaments and won the 2016 India International series title.

His performance at Syed Modi International in 2017 wasn’t up to the mark, as he lost in the pre-quarters to compatriot Sourabh Verma by 14-21, 16-21. Later that same year, he became the number one junior singles player in BWF World Junior ranking.

Lakshya Sen Career (2018-2021):

Lakshya started the year 2018 on a good note. He defeated top-ranked Cheam June Wei in straight games, 21-11 and 21-16. But, he lost a tough match against two-time Olympic gold medalist Lin Dan.

In 2018, he claimed the Asian Junior Championship title. Lakshya beat World Junior No. 1 Kunlavut Vitidsarn in the final with scores of 21-19 and 21-18.

In the 2018 Summer Youth Olympics, Lakshya participated as a fourth seed. There, he won the silver medal in the boys’ singles category after losing to China’s Li Shifeng. After that, he played in the mixed team events, where his efforts helped Team Alpha won the gold medal.

He won the bronze medal at the BWF Junior World Championships after being defeated in the semifinals in a closely fought three-sets match.
